About the Exhibit
Jonathan Hansen - “Rotoscope Paintings”

The struggle I had in creating this series of paintings was subject matter. Working directly from photographs presents certain challenges to the artist. Instead of creating representational work of those photographs, I wanted to abstract the image so that pattern, shapes, and color, emerged to the forefront. The subject is still there, recognizable, but it takes a back seat to the composition. I had originally been influenced by the film “Waking Life”. Different artists were chosen to paint over each frame of the film to create a modified, cartoon version of the original shot. This collection represents four years of creating work based in that style. All of the original pictures were taken by me of friends and family, and Rotoscoped by hand using Photoshop before being painted on canvas.
