About
the Exhibit |
Laurie Leavitt
Light is an inspiration in my work. A representational painter, my art comes from the world around me. Light is a unifying element and helps me create the illusion of space on my two dimensional canvas. I paint, often heightening the contrast between light and dark to establish depth and volume. I delight in finding the color and reflected light in the shadows. "Shadow is a color as light is, but less brilliant. Light and shadow are only the relation of two tones,"- Paul Cezanne.
My latest landscape work is the most abstract and impressionistic of my paintings. The complexity of trees with all their colorful leaves and branches with light shining through, defies a strict rendering. It allows me to get lost in the two dimensional surface, texture and color of the canvas and paint.
