Artist Statement
David Kahn is a digital fine art photographer based in Natick, Massachusetts. He starts with digital images captured from a scene using traditional photographic techniques. Then, using state-of-the-art computer technology, he processes these images to achieve his vision for each work. His goal is to remain true to the original scene, neither adding new elements nor removing ‘defects’. Instead, through the use of digital effects, David aims to bring his vision of the scene into focus for the viewer. Lighting and shadow, contrast and color, shape and texture all play a key role in the resulting images.
David’s current artistic emphasis is the photographic montage – a group of related images presented in a single artwork. These images may vary in one or more dimensions (such as time or color) though there is always something that holds the images together in an effective montage. David enjoys exploring new ways to apply the montage style, the artworks in this exhibition were chosen to illustrate the flexibility of the montage style. His goal is to create a whole which is greater than the sum of its parts, and where the composite image tells a more compelling story than a single image.
David has presented his works at solo and group exhibitions throughout the MetroWest area, and is an active member of Natick Open Studios. David is the founder of New England Light Painters, a peer-mentoring association devoted to encouraging and nurturing photographic artists. David enjoys speaking to photography and art organizations, and is teaching a class in macro photography for artists at Wellesley College in March 2010.
